View from my hotel in NYC. I was in the city for work this weekend and got to stay at the Millennium Hilton overlooking the construction on the World Trade Center site.

I was also provided with earplugs because crews were working 24/7 on the site.

For those in NYC be sure to check out the event below; the book (and subsequent competition) look to be a great survey of high-density living in urban spaces, something I’ve mentioned before and should be of interest to anyone designing in the city.
architizer:

TONIGHT! Architizer will be at Storefront for Art & Architecture (97 Kenmare Street at Lafayette, New York, New York) with Actar Publishing for the launch of TOTAL HOUSING.
The projects in the book are amazing, the conversation is sure to be stimulating, and one of our editors may or may not be modeling how to flip its pages on video.
RSVP here.

NYC’ers go check this out for me.

I’ve been sick and on call the past couple days, so here is a bit of what I have been reading this week.

Empire State of Mind, Backpacks among the Briefcases

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/25/education/edlife/25urban-t.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&ref=columbia_university

For anyone who attended a less than traditional college in the city this article is great.  SAIC had no main campus, large community, or sorority life, but the over all experience was more “real-life” than those things.

“When you are dealing with a nontraditional campus where the campus is a collection of buildings,” said Tracy Robin, assistant vice president for student health and support at the New School, “it can be hard to figure out who to connect with, and where. Going to school here is one of many identities students take on, but being in the city is often the first.””

“At many urban universities, a swift education in city living is built into the curriculum.”

Europe Without Beds

A great read for anyone currently suffering la douleur exquise pour dépaysement. A look into contemporary travel for budgeteers (as most of us are) based on short term rental services.

The Fine Art of Recommending Books

http://www.salon.com/books/laura_miller/index.html?story=/books/laura_miller/2010/07/21/recommendations

A brief, but interesting article on the elements that draw us into books.

“I don’t think people read ‘for’ pleasure, exactly,” he went on. “Of course there is pleasure in reading. But mainly we do it out of need. Because we’re lonely, or confused, or need to laugh, or want some kind of protection or quiet — or disturbance, or truth, or whatever.”
